The latest uTorrent version comes with a WebUI interface where it turns your Torrenting box into a webserver. Once the webserver for uTorrent has been enabled, you’ll be able to login from anywhere in the world and have your Torrenting Box download new torrents.

The steps to enabling this is very easy and straight forward.

Download the Latest Version of uTorrent.

Download the webUI addon extension.

Extract and place all the webUI addon extension files into your “%appdata%/uTorrent” directory. You can get here by going to any URL / Address Field and typing %appdata%/uTorrent.

Open uTorrent, Options -> Preference -> Advanced -> Web UI.

Check the “Enable Web Interface” check box.

Enter in a Username and Password

Check the “Alternative listening port” check box. For some reason, this is required.

To access the webUI interface, type in,
a.) http://localhost:PORT/gui/ -> If your accessing from the same computer
b.) http://local-ip-address:PORT/gui/ -> If accessing from a different computer but within the same LAN network
c.) http://internet-ip-address:PORT/gui/ -> If accessing from a remote location from the internet.

For option c.) to work, you need to make sure that your port forwarding settings have been setup properly. Basically, you need to make sure that the port you specified for the webUI has been forwarded to the Torrenting Boxes IP-Address.

That is all, if you have any questions, please leave a comment and I’ll be glad to help you out.

Hopefully this post will help all you new Linux users who are trying to find a way to torrent on your new operating system.

If you’ve just installed Linux on your computer, and are stuck without being able to download things, what do you do? Please note, this tutorial is written from experience using Ubuntu 8.04. If you use any other distro, the information may change a bit, but not much.

Well, most Linux distros come with a torrent client built in.
But, that’s not the best solution for you. It’s often slow, and it lacks the features of other popular torrent clients.

If you’re an Azureus user, then you’ve got no problem.
Azureus is out for Linux as well! The kind people who created the great torrent client must have realized that, hey! It’s a good idea to release stuff on Linux, people actually do use that!!

If you don’t have Java Runtime Environment installed, this program won’t work. Make sure you have that first.

To obtain Azureus for your Linux, just go to http://www.azureus.com and scroll down. Click the “Download Vuze” button.
They have their website set up to automatically recognize your operating system and provide you with the functional download for your machine, so you won’t have to go through anything else in the site after this, just click that and download it.

Once it’s downloaded, open up the archive in your file browser.
Then, extract the archive wherever you want.

Now, go to the point of extraction and enter into the folder that says “Azureus.”
Then, double-click on the file that says “azureus” with no extension, and tell it to run.
Now the splash screen will come up, and the program will start like normal.
If you want, you can even create a launcher (shortcut) for this file on the desktop for easy access.

If you use uTorrent, your situation is a bit more difficult.
You have three options here…

One, you can emulate uTorrent through Wine or Crossover, or another program to let you run Windows programs on Linux.

Two, you can try out KTorrent

Third, you can switch to Azureus.

Ktorrent is a Linux alternative for uTorrent for the KDE desktop environment, but I could imagine that it would work in GNOME as well.

Now that you’ve got the torrent client, you can successfully download .torrent files.
But, wait — your video won’t play!
Get VLC Media Player. It contains all the codecs you could ever need to get your videos working, and it is out for Linux.

But — there’s still a problem.
What if you downloaded a torrent, and you find a .rar file?
You can’t open rar files natively in most Linux operating systems! What will you do?
Well, one thing you can do is open up a Terminal window, and type in

“sudo apt-get install rar” without the quotes, of course.
Using sudo gives you root administrative privileges for the following command, and the command apt-get install will install the application that you type in (in this case, rar).

rar will give your operating system support to open, extract, and create rar files.

Now you can torrent just as well on Linux as you could on your previous operating system!
Comment if you’re having problems still.

Moxie Colo, a hosting company used by several popular torrent sites, has been contacted by the CRIA, ordering them to shut down all the torrent sites they host and hand over all the private information of the admins and all relevent logs on the site.

As of now, Moxie Colo is not following the orders.

The CEO of Moxie Colo, Sean Corbin, has been quoted telling TorrentFreak

“We will not be following the request and will be fighting for the rights of our clients as to date laws in Canada protect them. …from what we understand these sites are not breaking any laws in Canada. If we do not comply they might bring legal action against Moxie Communications, as they believe without us these sites could not do what they do so therefore we are as bad as they are.”

I’m behind this guy, 110%.

Some of the sites that Moxie Colo hosts are What.Cd, Sumotorrent, and BTMon.

What do you guys think? Do you think that the CRIA is right in ordering this, and what do you think the outcome will be?
From what I’ve heard, What.Cd is already switching hosts.

Have you experienced slow downloads even when there are hundreds of seeders? This is because there are tons of torrenters out there that only download and not upload. Due to this, people came up with Invite Only Torrent Trackers where you need membership to download from their list of torrents.

Normally, there list of torrents are not as vast but they definately have all the hot items and most of all, you will download them fast. Another great thing about these Invite Only trackers is that the community is more involved and people tend to be more generous. If you ask someone for something that you are not able to find, more people are willing to seed for you.

One of the more popular invite only torrent tracker is Demonoid. Now, how do you get an invite to one of these trackers? Most of the major torrent sites like The Pirate Bay, have a forum where people trade invites. I recommend that you join the forums and start getting involved with the community.

Since you are just starting and don’t have an invite to offer, you are going to have to get creative and offer something else. How I started was, I offered to upload a game to someone directly to someone that was offering a Demonoid invite. Basically, your first invite is a little difficult but once you get your first, you can easily leverage that to get other invites and many more things. It becomes a commodidy in the Pirating world.

If you have any questions about this, please feel to ask in the comments and I’d gladly be able to help.

Do you have multiple computers at your house? Is your electric bill high? Wish you can avoid redundant downloads? Is your computer loud? This is a basic idea but it works and it is very useful.

What is a Central Pirating Unit?

A central pirating unit is a system where all the pirated transactions occur from one centralized location. A CPU is just one dedicated machine on the network that can be accessed by your friends or family. Once access is given, anyone can login to it and download there torrents through this system. In result, redundant downloads of the same files are eliminated and all files are stored and organized in a centralized location.

Why use it?

Organization: Instead of having to browse through multiple shared directories in different computers, you can find all your files in one place.

Disk Space Efficiency: Duplicate files are eliminated in the network as they are stored in a single location.

Energy Efficiency: Instead of multiple computers running at all times, a single computer will running 24/7 to perform all the downloads / uploads.

Central Processing Unit Efficiency: Instead of having to have Bitorrent or any of your other P2P client running on your main machine, it is offloaded to another machine. In result, increases the amount of CPU time available for your games or application that you are using at the time.

How to set one up.

System Requirement: A system with accessing to the network / internet. Also, a large hard-drive is not required but necessary as it would be extremely annoying to constantly have to delete on this drive. I recommend getting low-performance drives as they cost less and performance is not a necessity here. Other than this, nothing else is required. Once the setup is complete, not even a keyboard, monitor or a mouse is needed.

Remote Access: Basically, we just need to enable the system so that it can be controlled remotely. If you are not computer savvy, I recommend you go to www.logmein.com and sign-up with a free account. This is one of the easiest and best methods to do this. The only downfall is the speed as you’ the connection will not be local but through the internet. For the savy folks, use a VNC program or any other remote access application you are familiar with.

Organization: Create a directory and take some time to categorize this. As multiple users will be adding new files to this directory, it is going to be important that it is clean and structure as much as possible. I suggest that you start out from the very fundamentals and get more specific as needed. Here’s an example of how my directory looks like.Sample Directory Structure
download
- Software
- - Games
- - Applications
- Video
- - TV Series
- - Movies
- New
- - In Progress

Notice how I have New and In Progress directory. Basically this is to keep all the files that have not been indexed in one place, and also to keep the files that are incomplete and currently being downloaded in one place.

Start Using it: Now just start installing your P2P applications and start downloading as you please.

There is a growing trend among many Internet Service Providers (ISP)—such as Comcast, Cox, and Time Warner—to engage in temporarily blocking ports used by the Bittorrent protocol. These companies are claiming that it is for the greater good. By blocking bandwidth hogging services from the network during certain hours of the day, there would be less congestion and improves the user experience. “They are just looking out for the customers,” some would say—yea right. This type of practice is not only unethical but also potentially illegal.

If internet access was a public good, then the provider—to some extent—has the right to limit the service to what they deem is best. However, with many of these companies, the service agreement at the beginning contractual date has always been unlimited access for the user. By blocking bittorrent access and singling out “excessive” users, the companies are violating the contract agreement that was established with that individual.

Comcast had publicly express that they were not blocking bittorrent entirely, but only during peak hours to ensure usability. However, Gizmodo posted a summary of a report published by Max Planck Insititue for Software Systems showing that Comcast’s policy on Bittorrent traffic translates to a 24-hour period, seven days a week ban of this P2P service. The report states that, “Most (573 of 599) U.S. hosts that observed blocking are located in Comcast and Cox networks. In Singapore, all blocked hosts are connected using the StarHub network. While we did observe blocking for hosts in 10 other ISPs (7 of which are in the U.S.), we did not see widespread blocking of BitTorrent traffic for hosts in those ISPs.” So this trend is primarily being practiced in the U.S. Users outside the states are not subjected to restrictions, yet. I’m pretty sure other companies will jump on the bandwagon with Comcast and Cox in the near future.

You can check to see if your ISP is throttling bittorrent usage by using a web-based analyzer created by the Max Planck Insitute for Software System. Here is a direct link. I am currently on ATT DSL, formerly SBC, and it looks like they are not bandwidth throttling or service blocking the Bittorrent protocol. But I wouldn’t be surprise if they start.
How do you guys feel about these companies giving users the short end of the stick? Should they have the right to block Bittorrent because it is used for illegal activities even though it is also largely utilized and intended for distributing legal material? Feel free to leave comments.

A new comer in the SuprBay forums started a new search engine called SeedNova. The site looks like it is in it’s infant stage but looks like it has potential. It is using AJAX to return search queries and returns them on the fly. As far as I can see, it is extremely fast and can see some benefits to using it. Check it out.

Currently only mininova.org is indexed but it’s said that others like The Pirate Bay and ISOHUNT will soon be indexed as well. I will keep track and post updates later.

Sucks how I missed Mother’s day to write this but how good of a present would pirated material be? Maybe good.

Imagine, receiving an external HD or a CD case full of DVDs? Carefully structured or labeled for you to be able to quickly and easily browse through. On top of that, you have a spare external HD now!

Now, for you next gift to a friends birth day or Christmas, put in that extra care and give him what he/she really wants. I guarantee that your friend will be satisfied.

Other Occasions to Consider

Anniversary / Valentines Day: Fill it with all your partner’s favorite romantic movies or music. Throw in some pictures while you’re at it. Forget the mixed cds and picture books. Go digital!

Thanks Giving: Who really gives away presents on this day? Well, I think it’s a perfect day to give thanks through Pirated materials.

Any Other Occasions?: Please comment. I would like to hear your ideas.
